For the sixth straight year, participation in turkey trot races has continued to grow, nearing the 1 million mark in 2016.
By doing so, Thanksgiving Day maintains its top spot as the sport’s most popular day to race, according to Running USA. In 2016, more than 961,000 runners turned out, up 6 percent from 2015.
As the number of finishers grows, so too does the number of events hosted. Year-over-year growth of Thanksgiving Day races was 14 percent, with 726 organized races taking place in 2016.
In the Central Valley, there are turkey trot or Thanksgiving themed races in Visalia, Bakersfield, Fresno, Modesto, Stockton and Hanford. Turlock and Merced host turkey trots the weekend before Thanksgiving.
